What a UPS does, and the three types
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) sits between the mains and your equipment. When power cuts, dips or spikes, it keeps servers, network and cameras running from its battery, giving you time to switch to a generator or shut down safely.
There are three main types:
Standby (offline)
Equipment runs on mains power and switches to battery only when power fails. Simple and low cost, for single PCs and routers.
Line-interactive
Like standby, but it also corrects small voltage dips and rises without using the battery. A common choice for network racks, NVRs and small servers.
Online double-conversion
Power is converted to DC and back to clean AC all the time, so the load never sees mains problems and there is no transfer gap. The standard for server rooms and data centres.

UPS sizing guide
A UPS has two ratings: kVA (apparent power) and kW (real power). Your total load in watts must stay below the kW rating, with room to grow. Longer runtime needs more battery, not a bigger UPS.

Batteries, replacement and maintenance
The battery is the part of a UPS that wears out. If the battery is weak, the UPS fails exactly when you need it. Regular testing finds the problem first.
- Lead-acid (VRLA): the traditional choice and lower upfront cost. Needs planned replacement during the life of the UPS.
- Lithium-ion: smaller and lighter, and offered on ranges such as Smart-UPS Ultra, Vertiv EDGE Li-ion and many three-phase systems. Higher upfront cost, longer service life.
In Saudi Arabia, summer heat in poorly ventilated rooms shortens battery life, and many sites see voltage dips or spikes when generators or large motors start. Keep the UPS room cool and test batteries on a schedule.

Network management cards and monitoring
A network card lets you see status, battery health and alarms from your browser, and shut servers down cleanly during a long outage.

The AP9640 card connects a Smart-UPS to your network for remote monitoring and control, real-time event notifications, and data and event logs.
APC SmartConnect and PowerChute
Smart-UPS Ultra offers remote monitoring through its SmartConnect Ethernet port. PowerChute Network Shutdown closes connected servers and virtual machines safely.
Vertiv IntelliSlot RDU120
Web interface, SNMP, BACnet and Modbus for Liebert GXT5, ITA2 and Vertiv EDGE. Factory-fitted on GXT5 6 and 10 kVA models and on Liebert ITA2.

Frequently asked questions
What does a UPS price depend on?
It depends on capacity in kVA/kW, type (line-interactive or online), phase, battery type, runtime, network card and installation work. Send us your load list and we will send a written quote for the right model.
Which UPS type is best for a server room?
For servers and storage we recommend an online double-conversion UPS, such as APC Smart-UPS On-Line, Smart-UPS Ultra or Vertiv Liebert GXT5 and ITA2. It gives clean power all the time and no transfer gap when the mains fails.
How often do UPS batteries need replacing?
It depends on the battery type, room temperature and how often the batteries discharge. Heat shortens battery life. We test batteries during maintenance visits and tell you when replacement is due, before they fail.
Should I choose lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries?
Lead-acid (VRLA) costs less upfront. Lithium-ion is smaller, lighter and lasts longer, which can lower maintenance over the life of the UPS. We compare both options in your quote.
Are you an APC or Vertiv partner?
We supply genuine APC by Schneider Electric and Vertiv products and licences through authorised distributors in Saudi Arabia, and our engineers install and support them. Manufacturer warranty is handled according to the vendor’s terms.
Can you maintain a UPS that you did not supply?
Yes. We can inspect an existing APC, Vertiv or other UPS, test the batteries and propose an AMC or battery replacement.
