What is Veeam Backup?
Veeam is a data protection software company. Its main product, Veeam Backup & Replication, is now at version 13 and is sold as part of Veeam Data Platform. It backs up your servers, virtual machines, cloud workloads and files, and lets you restore a single file, a full server or a whole site when something goes wrong.

How Veeam licensing works
Veeam Data Platform uses the Veeam Universal License (VUL). It is licensed per workload, not per CPU socket, and the licence is portable. You can move it between a VMware host, a Hyper-V host, a physical server or a cloud VM without buying a new licence.

Subscription or perpetual? New Veeam licences are mainly sold as subscriptions for a fixed term, with support included for the whole term. Perpetual per-socket licences are no longer sold to new customers. If you already own older socket licences, we can help you plan the move to the Universal License at renewal.
Ransomware protection built into Veeam
Attackers now target backups first. Veeam includes several features that keep at least one clean copy of your data out of their reach and prove that it can be restored.
Immutable backups
Backup files are locked for a period you set. During that time they cannot be moved, modified or deleted.
Hardened Repository
A Linux-based backup repository that keeps backup files immutable and protects them from malware and accidental deletion.
Veeam Software Appliance
A pre-hardened, ready-to-deploy appliance for the backup infrastructure, so less depends on manual hardening.
Malware detection
Scans at backup and at restore, including AI-based detection and YARA rules, to flag infected restore points.
SureBackup
Automated recovery verification. It starts machines from backup in an isolated environment and tests that applications actually work.
Secure Restore
Scans a restore point for malware before it is restored, so you do not bring an infection back into production.
The 3-2-1-1-0 backup rule
Veeam recommends the 3-2-1-1-0 rule. It is a simple checklist we use when we design a backup system.
3 copies
Keep three copies of your data: the original and at least two backups.
2 media types
Store copies on two different types of storage, for example disk and tape or disk and cloud.
1 offsite
Keep at least one copy in another location and network.
1 immutable
Keep one copy immutable or air-gapped, so ransomware cannot change or delete it.
0 errors
Verify restores automatically, for example with SureBackup, so there are zero surprises on recovery day.

Aramco CCC and NCA backup requirements
Backup is a common finding in audits. The NCA Essential Cybersecurity Controls (ECC) include a backup and recovery control that expects periodic backups and periodic testing that the backups can be restored. Aramco CCC assessments under SACS-210 also look for working backup and recovery.

Which Veeam edition do I need?
Small businesses with up to 50 workloads usually start with Veeam Data Platform Essentials. Larger companies choose Foundation for backup and recovery, Advanced to add Veeam ONE monitoring and analytics, or Premium to add orchestrated recovery and compliance reporting. We help you choose based on your workloads and audit needs.
How is a Veeam licence counted?
Veeam Data Platform uses the Veeam Universal License, counted per workload. A virtual machine, cloud VM or physical server uses one licence. One licence covers three workstations, or 500 GB of unstructured file data. The licence is portable between platforms.
Can I still buy a perpetual Veeam licence?
New Veeam licences are mainly sold as subscriptions for a fixed term, with support included. Perpetual per-socket licences are no longer sold to new customers. We confirm the licence options available for your case in the quote.
Does Veeam Data Platform back up Microsoft 365?
No. Microsoft 365 is protected by a separate product, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, licensed per user. It backs up Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business and Microsoft Teams.
How does Veeam protect backups from ransomware?
Veeam can store backups as immutable copies, for example in a Linux-based Hardened Repository, so they cannot be modified or deleted for a set period. It also scans for malware at backup and restore, and SureBackup tests that backups can actually be recovered.
Can Veeam help us pass Aramco CCC or NCA audits?
