Who owns cybersecurity in your company?

In many Saudi companies the answer is the IT manager, on top of servers, users, printers and projects. Security decisions get made in a hurry, policies are copied from the internet, and nobody tracks risk between audits. Then a customer questionnaire, an NCA ECC requirement or an Aramco supplier audit arrives, and everyone scrambles.

The problem is not the IT team. It is that security needs an owner who has time to plan, measure and report. Without one, money goes into tools while basic gaps in access, patching, backups and incident readiness stay open.

  • No written security strategy or roadmap
  • Policies that exist on paper but are not followed
  • No clear view of risk for management
  • Audits and questionnaires handled at the last minute

What a virtual CISO does for you

A virtual CISO (vCISO) is a senior security consultant who works with you part-time, every month, as your security lead. We join your management meetings, guide your IT team and suppliers, and keep the security programme moving between audits.

We do not replace your IT staff; we give them direction and backing. Your team, or Waves engineers where you want hands-on help, carry out the technical work. The vCISO sets priorities, checks progress and reports results in plain business language. Each month you see what was done, which risks went down and which decisions need management approval next.

The engagement is monthly, with an agreed number of days or hours, so you can start small and grow as your programme matures. Many clients begin after a cybersecurity risk assessment, which gives the vCISO a clear starting point.

How the vCISO supports Saudi compliance

A compliance programme is more than a one-time audit. The vCISO keeps the evidence, owners and reviews in place all year, so the next audit is routine rather than a rush.

  • NCA Essential Cybersecurity Controls (ECC): for government bodies, critical sectors and their suppliers. We lead the governance and risk management parts and track vulnerability and patch management, identity and access, incident management and awareness.
  • Saudi PDPL: we help you map personal data, set access and retention rules, and prepare a process to assess and report personal data breaches to SDAIA when required.
  • Aramco SACS-210: we track MFA on remote access, cloud, email and privileged accounts, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, the 24-hour incident notification to Aramco, log retention of at least one year, monthly vulnerability scans, tested backups and yearly awareness training.
  • Customer and supplier questionnaires: we prepare consistent, honest answers and the evidence behind them.

Products we use

The vCISO service is vendor-neutral and starts with what you already own. Where tools are needed, we commonly work with Sophos and Fortinet for firewalls, Sophos for endpoint protection and managed detection and response, Microsoft Defender, Entra, Intune and Purview for Microsoft 365 security and data protection, Cisco for networking and KnowBe4 for awareness training and phishing simulation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a virtual CISO?

A virtual CISO is an experienced security leader who works with your company part-time on a monthly basis. You get the planning, policy, risk and reporting work of a CISO without hiring one full time.

Do we need a vCISO if we already have an IT manager?

Usually yes, if security keeps slipping behind daily IT work. The vCISO supports your IT manager with direction, priorities and management backing. Your IT team stays in charge of day-to-day operations.

How much time does the vCISO spend with us?

We agree a monthly allocation based on your size, risk and compliance needs. It can be adjusted as your programme matures, for example more time before an audit and less once things are stable.

Can the vCISO help with an NCA ECC or Aramco supplier audit?

Yes. The vCISO prepares the policies, risk register and evidence, tracks open gaps and supports you during the audit. Waves engineers can also fix technical gaps if you want hands-on help.

Will you help us if we have a security incident?

Yes. The vCISO builds your incident response plan and runs tabletop exercises in advance. During a real incident, Waves engineers support you, with our vendor partners’ incident response teams brought in where needed. See our incident response service.
